Robotic surgery has been on the rise in recent times as a revolutionary tool in the field of medicine and surgeries. Their use has become the norm in many countries around the world. The term “robotic surgery” basically refers to the condition where robot-assisted surgeries are performed that allow surgeons to perform complex operations through very small incisions resulting in better outcomes and enhanced patient recovery.

Robotic-assisted urological procedures

Many urological surgeries are performed through a robot, but the three most important robotic urology surgeries are:

-Total and partial nephrectomy (kidney surgery)

  -Prostatectomy (prostate surgery)

 -Cystectomy (bladder surgery)

Robot-assisted surgeries

Kidney surgery (in case of kidney cancer)

When kidney cancer is diagnosed, your doctor may recommend a partial nephrectomy (the surgeon removes only the tumor, in order to preserve as much healthy kidney tissue as possible); or radical nephrectomy (the surgeon removes all of the affected kidney).

Surgeons can perform kidney surgery through open surgery or minimally invasive surgery.

Traditional open surgery is performed through a long incision in your side, abdomen, or back; During this procedure, the surgeon looks directly at the surgical area and removes part or all of the kidney using handheld tools.

The best minimally invasive surgical procedure for partial or radical nephrectomy; It is robot-assisted surgery, using the da Vinci technique.

Surgeons using the da Vinci system may be able to perform kidney surgery with a few small incisions and a high-resolution 3D vision system using small instruments.

Advantages of robotic nephrectomy:

-It does not cause any complications.

-The patient stays in the hospital for a maximum of one or two days.

 -Less blood loss.

 -Less pain.

Prostate surgery

In the case of prostate cancer, robotic surgery has a fundamental role in removing the tumor; Without causing enuresis and erectile dysfunction.

Radical prostatectomy can be performed through open surgery, which requires a large incision in your abdomen, or a minimally invasive technique.

There are two minimally invasive methods: laparoscopic prostatectomy and robot-assisted prostatectomy, using the da Vinci technique.

With the da Vinci system, the surgeon can operate more clearly through small incisions; While the cancerous prostate gland i meticulously removed, erectile function is not affected most of the time and there is a faster return of incontinence.

With robotic surgery, the patient may stay in the hospital for a shorter period of time; the urinary catheter is not maintained for several days.

Bladder surgery

Cystectomy is major surgery to remove the entire bladder (radical cystectomy) or part of the bladder (partial cystectomy), and this procedure helps treat bladder cancer.

When the disease is in an advanced stage, the entire bladder must be removed. With traditional surgeries, people needed an external urine collection bag; But now with a robot that gives more precision, surgeons have developed ways to build a bladder replacement:
a neobladder (a urologist uses a long piece of small intestine to create a continous reservoir to store urine).

Robotic surgery plays an important role in treating bladder cancer. And it has multiple advantages:

 - Better rendering of textures with a high-resolution 3D rendering.

-Less blood loss than with open surgery.

-Low risk of complications and infections.

 - Decreased pain.

-Faster improvement, especially in the case of partial cystectomy.
